I purchased this non-working product from eBay after playing with the Quest 2 to understand the design and engineering trade-offs considered that contributed to the weight of the device.
Throughout the product breakdown, I will be taking into account the weight of the different parts and their materials to create an understanding how it plays a role into the total weight of the product.
Teardown Overview
Meta made a number of considerations for the weight of the device and considered a number of different user experience trade offs in the process. The rechargeable batter is only slight bigger than that of an iPhone, and can hold a charge for ~2 hours before needing to plug in again. The LCD is lighter and thinner than it’s LED counterparts, but is lacks the quality and crispness of images that the LED can provide. The lens have a similar story. While there are better lens on the market for allowing a crisper and more realistic view of the images, Meta chose the lighter material. All in all, Meta’s goal of the Quest 2 was to introduce VR to a set of users at a price point not traditionally accessible to this audience. With the headset only being $300, Meta was able to sell nearly 20 million devices. The tradeoffs in design were made in order to make a cheap, and easy to use product.
